Time management technique for entrepreneurs with ADD

How to prioritize your busy schedule

Indeed, the most precious resource that we have in our lives is our time.  It slips away every second like sand through an hour glass.  As entrepreneurs, we are even more stressed because there are thousands of big and little things to do but sometimes only one or a handful of people available to accomplish these tasks and projects.

Add to that an entrepreneur with Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (AADD) and you have a real problem staying on focus, staying on track and getting things done.

So, how does one quickly and easily prioritize our work and keep on track, particularly when we are our own boss?

Ben Franklin effort x importance formula

Honestly, I’m not sure if Ben Franklin actually had a formula.  But, he was certainly a Leonardo da Vinci Renassisance Man type of guy with a ton of memorable sayings like, “early to bed, early to rise…” and “a penny saved is a penny earned…”  So, I’m presuming that a guy like Ben might have come up with a formula like this.  Here it goes…

Level of Effort x Importance = Priority

Assume that the level of effort is on a scale of 10 where 1 is easy and 10 is hard. Then, assume that the level of importance is also on a scale of 10 where 1 is most important and 10 is least important.

Next, brainstorm all of the big and little tasks that you have to accomplish … everything from applying for a logo at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to getting a PO Box to developing a set of proposals to changing the address on your Netflix account.

Step 1: Brainstorm tasks

Task
Change address on Netflix
Order new business cards
Buy dry eraser and markers
Select and hire a “DC seo consultant”
Buy more stamps at Post Office
Initiate trademark online at USPTO
Proposal: ACE moving & storage
Proposal: X-gen solutions
Proposal: Wiley Coyote
Buy batteries AAA
Deposit checks in the bank

Step 2: Assign level of effort

Task Effort
Change address on Netflix 1
Order new business cards 1
Deposit checks in the bank 2
Buy dry eraser and markers 3
Buy more stamps at Post Office 3
Buy batteries AAA 3
Select and hire a “DC seo consultant” 4
Initiate trademark online at USPTO 4
Proposal: ACE moving & storage 5

Time management – determine level of effort

Step 3: Assign importance

Time management – determine level of importance
Task Importance
Select and hire a “DC seo consultant” 1

Initiate trademark online at USPTO 1
Deposit checks in the bank 1
Buy more stamps at Post Office 5
Order new business cards 6
Change address on Netflix 8
Buy dry eraser and markers 10
Buy batteries AAA 10

Step 4: Multiply Effort x Importance

Task Effort Importance Priority
Deposit checks in the bank 2 1 2
Initiate trademark online at USPTO 4 1 4
Select and hire a “DC seo consultant” 4 1 4
Proposal: ACE moving & storage 5 1 5
Order new business cards 1 6 6
Proposal: Wiley Coyote 6 1 6
Proposal: X-gen solutions 7 1 7
Change address on Netflix 1 8 8
Buy more stamps at Post Office 3 5 15
Buy dry eraser and markers 3 10 30
Buy batteries AAA 3 10 30
Time management – prioritize tasks

I hope that helps you stay on focus and accomplish the more important things in your life and business.
