Summer Hackathon Day One by Joyce Duan

Hello!

I’m Joyce Duan and I’ve joined InQbation in their summer hackathon as a developer on the sprint team. I just graduated from Thomas Jefferson HS and I’m so excited to apply what I’ve learned about computer science from my courses to a project that has the potential to really take off and make a change.

Today, day one, we started off with introductions. Everyone on the team is really motivated and excited to build something cool. We learned why we all wanted to be here and I can already tell each everybody is going to get something great out of the experience.

We talked more about start-ups in general, and the potential of start-ups to really take off. Honestly, it was inspiring to hear Blake talk about the fact that what we do could potentially be that successful. It’s not inspiration I’ve heard often in school.

We then reviewed Agile methodology. It was not something I was familiar with until recently so the review was a nice way to get everyone on the same page. I’m a big fan of this way of working rather than the traditional business method because I feel it’s suited more for my personality type.

Finally, we talked ideas. The two products that InQbation has already put out are exciting and really useful so I feel that there is a lot of potential for them to gain more traction. The new idea that we discussed at the end of the day is also interesting because it takes what all websites do and tries to put it together to create a product that is the ultimate package.

At the end of the day, I was astonished by how much I had already learned and been exposed to in just a few hours. It makes me excited to think about how much I will grow and mature as a programmer and thinker over the next six weeks. This kind of exposure and experience is just what I need to motivate myself to do big things.

I’m so excited!

Joyce Duan
