Fighting crime with Twitter

Police agencies are turning to social-media sites to connect with the public and share news about crimes, road closures and other public-safety information. Some are unnerved at the thought of officers hanging out in online forums where citizens are used to catching up with friends, but others defend the use of social media as an effective outreach tool. “Part of our crime-fighting plan is community engagement,” said Anthony Guglielmi, the Baltimore City police spokesman who recently launched his department’s twitter account.
