Drag-and-drop content layouts in WordPress

WordPress is a great Content Management System (CMS), but it often falls short when dealing with pages (or posts) that require a layout different than a linear one. Fortunately, WordPress is very flexible in terms of extensibility, allowing the developers around the world to create plugins that improve or add new features to the CMS.

For this post, I’m going to focus on a free plugin that allow us to easily create content layouts using drag-and-drop.

Page Builder by SiteOrigin

Let’s first take a look at the 1-minute video the development company (SiteOrigin) have made to present the plugin:

As you can see, using Page Builder we can create fluid layouts containing blocks of content, located in different columns per row (divided by percentages), with as many rows as we need, right from the WordPress editor, in an easy graphical way. You can find more information in the documentation.

Each of block of content is filled using widgets included in the WordPress core, as well as external ones provided by third-party plugins, ranging from simple text widgets, forms, galleries, and calendars, to even include content derived from other posts and pages. This subject is going to be covered in a future blog post.

These are some of the controls of the plugin.

Other alternative plugins are Page Layout Builder and Advanced WP Columns.

Please keep in mind that these plugins are focused on creating layouts for the content inside pages and posts, not layouts for general WordPress themes.
